In the fall of 2003 a small group of singers got together and said, “Let’s sing some jazz standards, some interesting new songs, and some favorites from the Great American Songbook!” The singers, all of whom were participating in other a cappella groups (such as the Vermont Choral Union), church choirs, and various other choral groups, wanted intimate, dense choral arrangements so that every part, Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass, had a harmonic line that provided harmony and rhythm in unexpected ways. With this goal, Calloway Taxi evolved into the present group of four singers, still discovering arrangements that swing as well as arranging many of our own songs just for us! Our name is taken from the jazz legend, Cab Calloway, and in this way we pay homage to the genre that initiated our group and propels us into the future.

In the six plus years of our existence, we’ve performed at corporate affairs, fund-raisers, churches, farmers’ markets, wine-tastings, anniversary and birthday parties, and retirement homes, among other events. Some specific venue are the Shelburne Wine and Coffee Shop, the Deborah Rawson Memorial Library Music Series, Lots O' Lips, Christmas Jazz on Church Street and at the University Mall, the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, and Richmond's Celtic New Year. We love to perform!

Our present complement of four singers: Bob Drawbaugh, Michele Grimm, Dave Lackey, and Terry Lawrence, has been together for about one year. Michele and Dave are actively arranging new music, and we always look for music that appeals to our audience and satisfies our own sense of musicianship. If you have suggestions, just let us know! We look forward to performing for you in the near future.
